Chiropractic Coaching: Making 2024 Your Best Year Yet

Howdy and welcome to Thrive in Five. I’m Dr. Dennis Perman, and I’ll be your chiropractic coach for today. This edition is called, Making 2024 Your Best Year Yet. Now some might say best year ever, but I don’t want this to be my best year ever, because then it’s all downhill from here. I want it to be my best year yet, so next year can be even better.

I’ll be covering six concepts, which are my go to coaching strategies to help the doctors I work with succeed at the highest level. We’ll be discussing the Be Do Have Principle, Identity Based Coaching vs. Strategy Based Coaching, The Two Dynamics of Growth, The Two Questions, Resource Building, and The Seven Pager.

Each of these topics holds an essential secret for making 2020 for your best year yet. And while they’re all useful, I present these different outlooks so you can find the combination and the formula that work best for you. Okay, fasten your seatbelts. Here we go. The first strategy to help you make 2024 your best year yet is simply referred to as Be Do Have.

I first heard about Be Do Have from Tony Robbins and Stephen Covey 40 years ago, but the concept of Be Do Have first surfaced in the writings of Ram Dass in the late 1960s. The idea is simple enough to have what you want to have. First, you must be the kind of person who would create that. And then you have to do the things that person would do.

And then you’ll have what that person would have. So by asking yourself, who would I need to be to perform at my best? You uncover the qualities, traits, and characteristics of the type of person who accomplishes what you want to accomplish. Identifying these beliefs, values, rules, and standards helps you to understand who you are.

Then, by asking yourself, what would I need to do to perform at my best? You uncover the actions, behaviors, habits, and patterns of the type of person who accomplishes what you want to accomplish. When you are being that kind of person and doing what that person would do, you’re in position to have what that person would have, be, do, have.

The second strategy to make 2024 your best year yet is the difference between identity based coaching and strategy based coaching. Most coaching is strategy based. Do this, and you’ll get that result. Shoot 500 foul shots every day and you’ll be more likely to hit those shots in the game. Practice asking for referrals or delivering a healthcare class and you’ll get better at it.

This seems right, but it’s a trap. It’s not wrong, but it’s incomplete. You can never outgrow your self image. Only by expanding on who you believe yourself to be can you skyrocket your success. That’s why identity based coaching not only considers the task at hand, but also the inner personal qualities you really need to excel, empowering you to outperform your personal best.

Do you need to be more confident, more focused, more motivated? Developing these characteristics can turbocharge your actions. So what you do has a bigger impact and helps you to have more, better, and faster. In a couple of minutes, we’ll talk about resource building, and you’ll get clearer on how to deliberately generate these qualities inside the skin.

But first, let’s talk about the third strategy to make 2024 your best year yet. The two dynamics of growth. If you try to pour nine ounces of water into an eight ounce glass, some water will spill over the side. Why? Because you can’t get nine ounces into an eight ounce glass. Well, you have an amount you can hold also, referred to as your capacity.

Capacity technology is the study of how much you can hold. Why do some DCs see 50 visits a week, others see 50 visits a day, while still others see 50 in a slow morning? This has little to do with adjusting ability, with kindness in people skills, and with philosophical orientation. It’s primarily based on the physics of ongoing growth, which is based entirely on the interaction of two factors.

First, you must build capacity. And second, you must fill that capacity with attraction. Then build more capacity and fill that with attraction and then build more capacity and fill that with attraction. This is the way to ongoing growth. Keep building capacity and keep filling it with attraction. The fourth strategy to make 2024 your best year yet is an exercise I call the two questions.

These two questions are the introduction to capacity technology. The first is called the dream and the second is called the identity profile. The dream question asks, if there were no rules and I couldn’t fail, what would my practice be like? The willful suspension of disbelief helps you throw the doors of your imagination wide open so you can just dream about your ideal without worrying about if it’s possible or how to do it.

Just let your mind go and think about your best possible experience in practice and beyond, and write it down. The Identity Profile question asks, Who would I need to be or become to have that practice? Brainstorm out the qualities, characteristics, and resources you’d need. What would you have to believe?

What would you value? What would you always do? What would you never do? Write it all down. These two questions launch you toward great achievement. Recognize your dream and become the kind of you who would make it real. Now we can talk about resource building. A practical technique that helps you to develop the qualities you need to show up at your best and perform consistently with that version of yourself.

Confidence, motivation, self discipline, resilience. Every resource state you have access to is based on only two factors. What you’re doing with your mind and what you’re doing with your body. If I asked you to show me what you look like when you’re happy, what would happen? Of course, everyone has their own formula for this, but it would include some facial expression, maybe a smile, some shift in your posture, maybe standing up straighter or leaning slightly forward.

Your thoughts might also change. Maybe. Visualizing experiences that please you or saying happy things to yourself. The point is you can manage your internal environment with a process I call resource building, where you learn the detail of your mind and body and choose resource states that serve you when you need them.

Get to know your mind and body and learn how to build and manage your resources. The sixth and final strategy you can use to make 2024 your best year yet is a time and energy management tool I call the seven pager. Simply print out seven blank appointment book pages from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep.

This is the canvas you’ll be painting your masterpiece on. Label the seven pages with the days of the week. You’re going to build an ideal week on these seven pages. Write in your current schedule. Office hours, family time, personal time, commitments outside your office. Make it as complete as possible.

Pulling it out of your mind and putting it on paper makes you more objective. At a glance, you can tell where repurpose or blank spots to insert something you want to do. You can also tell if and when you are over programmed, so you can make changes there as well. Wake up time, bed time, meal times, it’s all out on the table to decide upon.

Tweak it until you get it right. 7 Pager forces you to evaluate what you’re trading your days in for. It can be uncomfortable, but redesigning your lifestyle and your life work balance can be your best strategy to make 2024 your best year yet. In fact, if you hit the QR code that you’ll see on your screen, it will take you to the Six Essentials website, which will help you to understand exactly what you need to do in practice to make your practice a masterpiece.

Thanks for watching. I’m Dr. Dennis Perman from The Masters Circle Global, where legends are made and legendary practices are built through chiropractic coaching.
