Our guest speaker at The Winners Circle event this past weekend was author Robert Cooper, PhD, who wrote the best-seller «The Other 90%,» which is must reading for anyone interested in personal growth and leadership. He blends neuroscience, ethics and success philosophy to create a series of simple, practical methods for getting the most out of yourself terrific stuff.
He peppered his talk with wisdom from many sources, not the least of which was his grandfather, who taught him that «the good and the great are the enemies of the possible.» All of us who aspire to continually outperforming ourselves need to take note of this little gem, because hidden in it is the answer to many of our questions about the roadblocks to success.
If you are good at something, Cooper explains, you will tend to repeat it and perpetuate it. If you are great at something, you will tend to be proud of it, and therefore defend it. In either case, your focus is on what has been, not what could be, and as such, youll tend to resist change and progress, thereby shutting you down to possibilities outside your previous realm of experience.
All innovation relies on a quest for the possible, so if you have found yourself settling into any ruts in your life or your practice, then Im talking directly to you. Your creativity will only kick in when you develop a desire to see things from a fresh perspective. My esteemed partner Dr. Markson frequently says «if you do the same old things in the same old way, youll get the same old results,» so sometimes, the best strategy is to select a viewpoint deliberately different from your present position.
Notice that this does not mean to wipe the slate clean and start everything over again, though occasionally this is necessary. It simply means to realize that there are always many interpretations to any set of circumstances, and if you can look at the challenge before you with an unsullied eye, you may come up with new distinctions that will lead you to new opportunities. This is the essence of the creative process.
If you are feeling stuck in your practice or your life, maybe its because you have fallen into the 'good and great«trap. Point your mind toward new possibilities by exploring a new frontier read about new topics, travel to new places, meet new people, become intrigued with new concepts and ideas. Your mind has an infinite memory bank that is waiting for you to fill it with whatever you deem important now, take the responsibility to keep moving ahead, not just by becoming more expert at the things you already own, but by putting yourself in the deliciously exciting, uncertain, curious place of the student, and you will find new levels of yourself you didnt realize were there for you to use and enjoy.
This is the way to make your time on this earth a masterpiece by continuing to learn, by opening new doors of perception for yourself throughout your life. Push the boundaries of your thinking and action, and imagine the possible miracles will follow.
