The Necessary Precondition for Explosive Growth
November 3, 2003

Sometimes the strangest memories flash through our minds, little snippets of a day gone by that somehow surface with a new significance. I had such an experience when I recalled a jingle from my childhood, from over forty years ago — the theme song to the Bugs Bunny cartoon show —

“Overture, purple lights,

This is it, the night of nights,

No more rehearsing, or nursing a part

We know every part by heart…“

Over the last several months, we have been consumed with the preparation for our Third Annual SuperConference, an event that promises to be the most exciting and impactful production we’ve ever tackled. To get an idea of how big this has become, last year we attracted about 1200 participants, making it one of the largest chiropractic gatherings of the year. This year, we expect over 2000 people, the equivalent of about ten decent sized weddings. The degree of planning and detail that has gone into this program is by far the most complex ever, and that is the point of this column — that if you desire to grow, to break through your current level of performance and explore new territory, you must be willing to think bigger, act bigger, and solve problems better.

Think about a large promotion you’ve done recently, and consider what went into it, compared to your normal, everyday investment of time and energy — it took more, didn’t it? More creativity, more concentration and focus, more self-discipline, more leadership, more accountability — this is a microcosm of all achievement, that to produce more, you must be willing to apply yourself more, and to raise your standards until you are playing at the required level to outperform your previous best.

But be aware — stuff will happen. When you’re playing above the rim, there are new distinctions and new challenges, and it would be foolish to expect otherwise. A bigger game necessitates better play, and reality will test you to see how well you do under pressure. Instead of dreading this opportunity, welcome it, for it is the necessary precondition of explosive growth. Every issue is part of the mix that makes the event the best it can be — and you’ll never know which detail that wasn’t sweated could cost you valuable return on your investment. That’s why you must plan thoroughly, so that when the big moment arrives, you know you did everything possible to succeed.

If feeling secure that you have done everything possible to prepare is the first step, then getting into the right state to execute is the next step, so that when the curtain goes up, you’re ready to deliver.

I certainly hope you’ll be joining us in Vegas this weekend, and if you are, you’ll be treated to the culmination of thousands of hours of work, and the combined passion of dozens of people who love chiropractic and want to see more people receive the miraculous healing benefits chiropractic is famous for. Ultimately, what drives us to produce such elaborate events is a feeling that we as chiropractors need to realize just how important and first class we really are, and how very much we have to offer. Our SuperConference is a statement to that effect — that we can come together, forget our differences temporarily, and rally around that which unites us — a desire to help people experience a better quality of life through our beloved healing art, and to be proud of who we are.
