Whenever Im at a gathering like last weeks SuperConference, with a large assembly of dialed-in people creating a powerful energy field, I am reminded of how important it is to help as many people discover chiropractic as possible. I remember the miracles I saw in my own office, and the ones I hear about every day while talking to doctors all over the world. I feel energized and committed.
And then, Im thrust back into the scuffle of everyday life, working intensely, making decisions and dealing with all the daily operations that make the big events happen. The euphoria of success can quickly be replaced by the stresses of delivering on your promises, and with those stresses, sometimes we may lose connection with our purpose, and start to forget why we do what we do.
But then mysterious coincidences may occur to help us focus back in. For example, yesterday was the childrens Disney production I wrote about a few weeks ago, and my thirteen-year-old son Dan did great. But my middle son Sean, a theater student at NYU, was also in a play last night, and we planned to go from Dans performance directly to Seans in an unprecedented double feature.
On Friday, I got a call from Sean he had injured himself somehow in one of his acting classes (was it Stage Combat? Sword Fighting? Maybe Afro-Haitian dance ) and was lying on the floor in his studio, unable to move. I thought fast, and referred him to outstanding Winners Circle member Dr. Jeannette Anderson, an expert in athletic injuries. (Dr. Anderson will serve our country, representing chiropractic at the Olympics this year, and also just ran the New York Marathon in 3:40.)
Seans girlfriend somehow got him over to Jeannettes office, and she did her magic. I spoke to him later that evening, and he was much improved, optimistic about being able to perform. Another visit Saturday morning, and he was able to play his role without a hitch another chiropractic miracle.
Now, the question is, what happens to all the people who wouldnt have known to visit someone like Dr. Anderson? How many people are suffering right now, because they dont know what chiropractic can do for them? And how is it possible that so many chiropractors hurt for new patients when there are thousands of people all around them who are desperate to learn from and be served by them?
This is what keeps me in the game, and I hope it inspires you to stay in the game as well. Theres no time to bask in the glory of past accomplishments, delightful and productive as they may have been. The battle is still raging all around us, and those of us who are sturdy enough and disciplined enough to keep playing hard will make an increasingly significant difference in the lives we touch.
Youve had experiences like the one I just described pull them out every now and then, and enjoy them again. Better yet, create new ones and reflect on the awesome healing power you work with every single day. But no matter how difficult or distracting your daily work may seem, find ways to remember how important what you do is in the lives of the people of your community. These episodes in your life are there for a reason, to ground you in the truth when you need it. Select a few choice memories to reconnect yourself to something greater for when you forget.
