Dear Doctor:
If you’ve been reading this column for a while, you’re probably anticipating a rousing Memorial Day message, culminating in a stirring call to action, to stand up for health freedom – and I must say I contemplated that, but I have to confess that another truly American phenomenon had my attention this past week.
Along with millions of our countrymen and women, I eagerly anticipated the final round of teenage reality TV show “American Idol,” with Diana DeGarmo vs. Fantasia Barrino in a sing-off for a million dollar recording contract.
I know what you may be thinking, kind of trivial and mindless, right? But for me, the excitement of this entertainment tournament is not the snide or vapid judging, nor the vultures circling, nor even many of the performances themselves – the juice for me is the possibility, the American dream, to put yourself in position to be discovered and then measure up against the competition. It’s a microcosm of what everybody wants -- to excel in their chosen field and be acknowledged for it.
These kids, each hopeful about his or her chances to get to the top, went through every emotion, every fear and desire, intensified in front of widespread TV and media coverage, so that each had a heavy dose of the exposure that comes along with stardom – what an opportunity, and what a reality check!
This is what each chiropractor has to face, also – a willingness to go public, to risk and be vulnerable, expecting that many people will indeed understand, embrace you and let you serve them well. Like on American Idol, there are many rejections and disappointments on the path to success, and small victories, too – but notice, there were other winners besides Fantasia. All of those kids profited immeasurably, not only by positioning themselves for future rewards, but by growing themselves, by confronting the adversities and gleefully responding. And the audience grew, too – in their imaginations, where all greatness is born.
You too can learn from those youthful enthusiasts, who threw caution to the wind in favor of taking their shot. Are you up to taking yours? Then get out there and do it -- let’s see what you got!
