How to build the essential resources of excellence
September 23, 2004

Dear Doctor:

Many of us realize that we need to be more confrontational, or more confident, or more focused, or more enthusiastic, but how are we supposed to do that?

There is a simple technique called the resource builder which gives you a direct method of developing essential qualities like these in yourself and others. First, identify the resource or attribute you’d like to enhance – say, for example, confidence.

Now, you’ve probably experienced confidence somewhere along the line, so figure out how you create this particular resource. You do it with some combination of steps using your mind and body – for example, you might have a particular facial expression, a pattern of breathing, a specific posture, a pace and type of movement, and a degree of muscle tone or tension that defines the right use of your body; and, you may have certain mental pictures, with the right sounds or voices, self talk with a proper volume, tonality and tempo, appropriate feelings or sensations, and some reference experiences you recall or imagine that exemplify confidence for you.

By brainstorming out these ten steps, putting them in a workable sequence, and rehearsing them until they become natural, you can crack the code on confidence, or any other resource you’d like to have more access to. It may seem oversimplified, but think about it – what are these resources made of if not what you’re doing with your mind and body? If no one ever pointed this out, it should seem obvious now – your mind and body provide the building blocks of these resources, and by noticing these patterns of physiology (bodyset) and internal representation (mindset), you can program yourself to know and follow that formula to deliver your very best at will.

This can be especially useful when you have typical scenarios in your life or practice that demand more than you usually bring to the table – a special speaking engagement, an important report of findings, or a big negotiation, to mention only a few.

To show up better, get yourself into the resource state you desire, like confidence, and while you hold yourself in that state, imagine the situations that would require that resource. This simple neurolinguistic exercise, known as “future pacing,” blends the resource into the imagined situations, constructing a technology of excellence.

Take the responsibility to learn about tools like this, and it will help you perform at your best. Make the investment of time and energy – it will reward you many times over.
