Dear Doctor:
So let’s see, coming up on Thanksgiving 2004, what’s the state of affairs? An awful war, a stagnant economy, the red states preaching morality while anticipating the latest installment of Desperate Housewives, the blue states heralding freedom and civil rights while NBA players invade the stands to beat the daylights out of drunken fans, the drug companies are out of control – these days, exactly what do we have to be thankful for? Well, I’ll give you my take on it – what we have to be most grateful for is…opportunity.
With all the problems the world is facing, with all the misunderstanding and violence and greed and misery, there has never been more opportunity to do something good.
You can reach out to the young people in your community, and sponsor health career days or young adult health information fairs. You can engage the ethnic and spiritual leadership in your neighborhood to create positive events for families to come together and learn about improving their quality of life. You can partner with local professionals to promote health and wellness values and recruit a common constituency to serve. You can be an example of love in action. You can find ways to be an advanced citizen.
Being an advanced citizen is more than working hard, or contributing to worthy causes, or supporting those in your sphere of influence, though it includes these things. Being an advanced citizen is about seeing the need for change, and leading the charge, in bold and subtle ways, to seeing that change through. Not everyone can hold a fancy title, but being a leader in our modern world is a most valuable commodity, with the most extraordinary rewards – and that is where the greatest opportunities reside.
Every day, you have a chance to profoundly impact people with universal truths – do you? Or do you fear that they’ll think you’re strange, or highbrow, or just wrong? Your patients are more open to your guidance now than ever before – they’re just waiting for a leader to show up, to help them sort out this crazy world and find a path to fulfillment. Miraculously, they have come into your life and practice, just in time for you to realize your own power – and that opportunity is one we can truly be grateful for.
Share what you know with your patients – you’ll never know how much it means to them until you risk it all and be your authentic self.
