As chiropractors and wellness professionals, we have a tremendous responsibility, and with it an extraordinary opportunity to meet a significant need in our communities – the desire for an ever-improving quality of life and as long a time as possible to enjoy that improved quality. These values, key interests of those who now set the trends in our society, are supported by the underlying philosophy of chiropractic – that health and wellness come from within, and that the secrets of wellness and longevity depend more on lifestyle decisions than any other factor.
We are in position to lead the charge, if we can only generate the certainty to state our case clearly. Every patient who comes into your sphere of influence should be exposed to the basis of what we do, so they can make better decisions going forward.
Will everyone understand and relate? Of course not, but it’s better to let a few seeds land on infertile soil than to plant nothing. Be generous enough and resilient enough to spread the word, and worry less about those who don’t get it than those who do. The more you hone your communication skills, your passion and your confrontational tolerance, the better your batting average, and the greater the response to your efforts.
To improve your results, remember two important keys to interpersonal relationship – first, you must connect with people before they will allow you into their world. You can use NLP matching and mirroring techniques to gain rapport, or at least you can be really nice, kind and personable, and that will set the stage. Next, ask questions to learn about the person’s values, and relate your services to their priorities – if you can show people how chiropractic solves a problem or addresses some issue or need, it gives them a reason to listen, accept your recommendations and follow through.
Be bold enough, flexible enough and persistent enough to invest energy consistently in telling people about the wonders of chiropractic, so they can experience the miraculous healing benefits chiropractic is famous for. Set a goal for how many people each day, week or month you will engage in this process, and see what happens next.
Give people a chance to make a good decision about health and wellness – it will build your practice, and you’ll make a bigger difference in the lives of the people you serve.
