Don't Ignore What's Behind The Recent Drug Scandals
December 6, 2004

Dear Doctor:

Amid this week’s batch of drug scandals is the confirmation of cheating with steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs among star baseball players, and another kid dying after being vaccinated, on the tail of numerous popular medications being yanked from the shelves because of serious side effects the companies knew all about.

We might be distracted by the thin excuses the ball players and pharmaceutical companies are offering up – but actually, these occurrences are not the problem, they are symptoms of the problem, a problem we don’t dare avoid addressing any longer.

The bigger issue is that people have been hypnotized into an outside-in mentality, where it’s considered acceptable to use external agents to commandeer inner function. Winning at all costs is difficult enough, but add the pressure of others using illegal substances, and how can an athlete compete without such advantages? And how are normal citizens supposed to respond, with this message permeating society?

There are two pernicious dynamics at work here – first, there has been an erosion of individual values that makes it okay to do things you know are wrong if you get a good result – but even more insidious is the tacit approval and then encouragement, when authorities not only aren’t outraged by such behavior, but rather promote it for profit.

When we tamper with nature, we pay dearly, because we disturb the balance that has been so delicately maintained. That’s why chiropractic wellness care is important in the first place – more than treating conditions, it’s about tuning the machine as efficiently as possible, for optimal performance whatever the circumstances, to approach perfect function in a near perfect system with perfect intelligence but limitations in matter.

This balance is ultimately self-correcting globally, but we can damage it locally with our indiscretions -- chemical toxicity that spoils inner and outer environment, emotional fallout from unadapted stresses, or injuries and repetitive microtrauma, any of which can upset the system and reduce normal function, in a single body or an entire culture.

Who is supposed to step up and expose the flaw in reasoning? The challenge is clear, and the gauntlet has been thrown down. Declare, and stand for your truth, above down, inside out – and do it now, as loudly as you can, if we’re to find a way out of this mess.
