Dear Doctor:
At last week’s consultants’ meeting, our team of experts discussed the recommended year-end activities to tie up the loose ends on 2004 and set the stage for a smooth and powerful entry into 2005. Here are some of the key points from that mastermind.
1. Review the successes of the past year, and celebrate the victories.
2. Re-connect to your purpose and your goals, and revisit them to make sure they still represent your identity and your desired outcomes. Commit to making any necessary changes, so you can congruently and effectively follow through and provide the finest service possible, with the best return for you.
3. Clean up your office, both physically and administratively. Make it neat. Clean up your computers and your paper files. Check and replenish your inventory.
4. Analyze your accounts receivable, and adjust off bad debt or uncollectible money, both from your receivables and your services. Your accounts receivable should accurately reflect the amount you are owed for services you have performed but for which you have not yet been paid.
5. Make a list of your tolerations – anything that you know you need to improve but haven’t yet done it. Identify these growing edges and decide which ones you will now address. Choose a reasonable target with a fair time frame, but stretch yourself beyond your comfort zone, and the rewards will justify your efforts.
6. Examine and refine your marketing plans for next year, based on what you learned this year. Make sure your goals are big enough to be motivating, but reasonable enough so they are believable.
7. Evaluate your team of professionals – not only your staff, but also your accountant, your attorney, your insurance advisor, your financial planner, your practice consultant and life coach. Establish your objectives and game plans with each, and resolve to do your part in each of these relationships, so the best possible results are produced with the optimal investment of time, energy and capital, and with minimal stress.
No one plans to fail, but many of us fail to plan. Invest something extra this year, and see if it helps you make 2005 your most successful and fulfilling year yet.
