The Best Reading of 2004
January 10, 2005

Dear Doctor:

There has never been a time when the written word has had more scope, power or opportunity. Once the domain of the wealthy, now anyone can potentially publish opinion, capture society’s attention and shape cultural trends, through the Internet and the automatic widespread connection that occurs as a result.

Will there come a time when physical books will not be sold, but only downloaded? Much like the mp3 distribution of music as compared to the sale of physical product, new rules and guidelines will emerge as we evolve our information pathways.

But the words, the words themselves – they are the magic that gives purpose to the pipeline – without something to say, it doesn’t matter how well you can communicate. So, this week’s column is a celebration of words – the best reading of 2004. Enjoy!
