The Power of Universal Forces
January 23, 2005

Dear Doctor:

It’s amazing -- Mother Nature cracks her knuckles, and there’s a hundred foot tsunami – she gets a chill, and we have two feet of snow, and a huge chunk of the country shuts down. I hope she doesn’t get indigestion – we couldn’t handle the volcanic eruptions.

No matter how you slice it, there’s no avoiding the obvious – universal forces dwarf anything humans can come up with, and the sooner we heed that observation, the quicker we align with nature instead of bucking her, and the faster we have the peace on earth we all intuitively want.

When BJ Palmer asks if we have more faith in a spoonful of medicine than in the spirit that animates the living universe, he brings to focus perhaps the greatest challenge we have facing us. In our zeal for developing our species, we have misinterpreted our role – we are part of the world, not the world itself. Our pompous and self-absorbed attitude has led us to pollute the planet, to contaminate our internal environments, to misappropriate our resources, and to allow our standards of global and self-management to slip into a critical state of emergency.

This trend of self-absorbed humanism above all else has to be seen for what it is – a swing of the pendulum that must come back to center. Whether you’re talking politics, health, finances, or whatever, the dearth of ethics and the default to convenience has permeated every aspect of our culture.

The answer? A return to self-responsibility, based on a revamped perception of the relationship between us and things natural. The Earth is here for our enjoyment but not our abuse. Our bodies are on lend to us so we can have magnificent worldly experiences, not as crash test vehicles. We must take notice of what’s really going on.

After all, what is the greatest dread in our society? We fear that some loose cannon will launch a nuclear weapon, spoiling the planet forever and reducing our world to a cinder, clinging to existence. And what is a nuclear bomb? Nothing more that a tiny morsel of universal power, turned loose by short-sighted humans to wreak untold damage.

When we remember to respect that which we as chiropractors work with every day, not only will we heal our self-concept and recognize ourselves as the wellness leaders of the modern era, we will also help to shift people’s consciousness toward a finer appreciation of, and a desire to work in harmony with, things natural – and the impact of such a movement will reverberate throughout all of time, far more than any puny and pathetic effort to do nature’s work for her.

And if we ignore this relationship? Well, it’s our choice, to make our world or to break it. Keep it in mind when you are deciding how to educate your patients about what you do.
