Chiropractic Practice: After The Pain Is Gone — The Shift From “Have To” to “Want To”

Hello everybody and welcome to Thrive in Five. I’m Dr. Dennis Perman and I’ll be your chiropractic coach for today. In this discussion of the Six Essential Strategies that we’ve been conducting over the last several months, more and more practical opportunities arise for us to apply them. The title of this Thrive in Five is After the Pain is Gone, The Shift From “Have to” to “Want to”.

Now I know everybody listening has had this experience. Patient starts coming in, they get great results, they’re happy as could be. They love chiropractic care, they love you. They swear, undying devotion, and then at some point after they start to feel better, well they start to disappear. And before you know it, you’re looking around what happened to that guy? Well, the problem is, unless we understand that patients go through a metamorphosis sometime in the early part of their care and we have to orchestrate that metamorphosis, then we end up sputtering wondering what happened to them.

You see, in the very beginning of care, patients need to be there. They have pain, they have symptoms, they have stress, and they must come in to see you. They perceive the need, but because every doctor experience they’ve ever had before you has most likely ended at the time that they started to feel better. They are not well versed in what to do in making the transition from have to to want to. In other words, they come in in the beginning based on your recommendations until they feel better. But shortly thereafter, their interest starts to be redirected back towards their lifestyle. They’re no longer thinking about their health because they’re only trained to think about their health when they’re in pain or when they have symptoms. It’s our responsibility to guide them from the point where they have to come in to helping them understand when and why they want to come in.

Now you notice from the Six Essential Strategies you’d be using a variety of different of these strategies in order to ha to do this, you have to overcome the friction that is keeping them in have to versus want to. You have to learn how to be good persuaders so that you can convince them that they need to bridge that transition. And of course, you have to add passion so that they have an emotional reason to make that transition. You see, they have plenty of emotion when they’re in pain, but it’s the emotion of trying to get outta pain. Once they’re feeling better, we have to do something to cause them to make that shift from have to to want to. So what can we do? Well, if you start at the time that they’re already feeling better, you’ve missed your opportunity, you’ve gotta begin helping them to understand that

Chiropractic care is a wellness lifestyle, not a treatment. And that the reason that they got into trouble in the first place was because they weren’t observing certain basic fundamentals that once they understand them, they can greatly diminish the likelihood of ever ending up in that need to place again. So it’s our responsibility as chiropractic leaders and entrepreneurs, as thought leaders, we have to conduct our discussion with patients, moving them toward the opportunity to embrace One two Care versus only have two care.
